Heart Chakra: The Complete Guide

Updated April 2026

The heart chakra — Anahata — is the fourth of the seven primary chakras. It sits at the center of the chest and serves as the bridge between the body's lower three chakras and upper three. When it's balanced, love, compassion, and forgiveness flow in both directions. When it's blocked, the rest of the system struggles.

This is the complete guide — what the heart chakra does, what blocks it, and the yoga, crystals, essential oils, and rituals that restore it.

I Am Joyful.

Kanya's Heart Chakra formulation (Bergamot, Geranium, Peppermint, Lavender, Ylang-Ylang) supports every practice in this guide.

What the heart chakra does

Anahata (Sanskrit for "unstruck") governs:

  • Love — given and received, toward self and others
  • Compassion — feeling with others without losing yourself
  • Forgiveness — the release of what you've been carrying
  • Emotional connection — the felt sense of belonging

It's associated with the color green (and sometimes pink), the element air, the mantra YAM, and the thymus gland. The thymus regulates immunity — a bodily parallel to how the heart chakra governs emotional resilience.

Signs it's out of balance

Blocked:

  • Difficulty trusting others; chronic loneliness
  • Holding grudges; unresolved resentment
  • Self-criticism; feeling unworthy of love
  • Physical tension in the chest or upper back

Overactive:

  • Over-giving at the expense of your own boundaries
  • Losing yourself in relationships
  • Jealousy; conditional love
  • Tendency to rescue others compulsively

What blocks the heart

Most heart blocks trace back to one of three roots:

1. Grief. Loss that hasn't been fully processed — a death, a breakup, a friendship that ended. Grief lives in the heart chakra; unacknowledged, it calcifies.

2. Betrayal. Trust that was broken and never quite repaired. The heart, once burned, learns caution — which is protective but also restrictive.

3. Self-rejection. This is often the subtlest. If you don't believe you deserve love, the heart closes to self-love first — and then, by extension, to others.

Practices to unblock the heart

Yoga

  • Camel Pose (Ustrasana) — deep chest opening
  • Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana) — front body activation
  • Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha) — accessible chest opener
  • Fish Pose (Matsyasana) — opens chest and throat together
  • Anahatasana (Heart Pose) — melting heart; extended child's pose variation

Meditation

Sit with hands over the heart. Breathe in for four counts, out for six. Longer exhales activate the parasympathetic nervous system — which is exactly what the heart chakra needs to open. Five minutes daily.

Essential oils

Kanya's Heart Chakra blend layers five oils chosen for their effect on mood and the nervous system:

  • Bergamot — lifts mood; anti-inflammatory
  • Geranium — calms emotional turbulence
  • Peppermint — opens the airways (where the heart chakra lives physically)
  • Lavender — softens the nervous system
  • Ylang-Ylang — carries the romantic thread

The same formulation runs through every product form — body oil, essential oil blend, roll-on. Apply over the heart, the inner wrists, or diffuse.

Crystals for the heart

The 11 most commonly used: Rose Quartz, Green Aventurine, Rhodochrosite, Rhodonite, Emerald, Jade, Malachite, Amazonite, Prehnite, Kunzite, and Chrysoprase. Rose Quartz is the one to start with. Full guide to each →

The mantra YAM

The traditional bija mantra for the heart chakra. Chanted aloud, it vibrates the chest. Repeat 12 times, slowly, with attention on the breath. Used for at least a millennium in Vedic practice.

A daily heart-opening ritual (5 minutes)

  1. Apply a drop of Kanya Heart Chakra blend over the heart center.
  2. Place a piece of rose quartz in your hand or on your chest.
  3. Chant YAM 12 times.
  4. Sit in silence with attention on the chest. Let whatever arises, arise.

Consistency matters. A five-minute ritual done daily will open the heart faster than a weekend retreat you don't return home from.
